About Michael and drumming

Hi! My name is Michael Eyb. I am a Drummer and Drumming Tutor.

My fascination with drums began when I was about seven years old. One of my cousins had a drum kit, and all I wanted to do when we visited his family was to play that kit! I was lucky to have a bash on it a couple of times, but despite my enthusiasm I didn't get a kit of my own for four long years.

Eventually, my parents caved into my endless pestering and bought me a second-hand drum kit for Christmas in 1985. They got it from Kevin Booth, a local drummer who lived three doors down from us. It was a beat-up old 1960's Premier six-piece kit (that means it had six drums), with a 70's Ludwig Supraphonic snare drum.

I was hooked and my parents were scared! I sure made a bunch of noise on that kit. Before I knew it, my parents moved my kit into the shed out the back and booked me into lessons with local teacher Mike Harris. I probably should have concentrated more, but somehow I managed to learn how to play!

I played in the school jazz band and then got into rock bands in my senior years. After graduating high school I started managing the band I was in. We played all up and down the coast, and even gigged in Sydney. We made a couple of recordings and videos, moved to Sydney and tried to 'make it big'. Unfortunately, we didn't crack the big time, but that's OK, because it meant I had the chance to start teaching.

My old drum teacher Mike Harris was giving up teaching and asked me to take over for him. It was great, and it still is!!

Fast-forward half a lifetime - I've been playing drums for nearly 39 years and teaching drums on and off for a total of 21 years.

I gig fairly regularly around the local area, and love to listen to and play all types of music.

And I love to teach all types of drumming too!
